Glebe wins OFSAA Medals

Glebe Collegiate picked up the regions only OFSAA medals this year with Yves Sikubwabo defending his Senior Boys title and the Glebe Midget Girls picking up Antique Bronze in the Midget Girls race.

The conditions could not have been better and the runners were greeted with sunny skies, no wind and ideal racing temperatures.

The day was book ended by strong runs for NC competitors. In the Midget Girls race, Glebe had three scorers in the top 60, led by NC bronze medalist Claire Smith (19). Her teammates, Alexa Livingstone (51), Tara Robinson (58) and Emma Barrett (179) ran strong enough to hold off St. Igantius (Oakville) for fourth place and the NC regions only team medal since Colonel By won Junior Girls bronze in Sarnia in 2008.

Sikubwabo, kept his streak alive defending his OFSAA Senior Boys title and setting his 6th course record in 6 races this season. His winning time of 22:25 lowering his won previous record by just over 1:15. Sikubwabo had company through the first 3K, but once again pulled away on the hill to run to a comfortable 24 second victory.

NC Championships

Glebe dominated the 2011 National Capital Secondary Schools Cross Country Running Championships winning 5 of 6 races and placing 3rd in the Junior Girls, qualifying all 6 teams for OFSAA at the Hornet's Nest next weekend.

The day started off with the MG showdown between East Champs Canterbury and West Champs Glebe. The upfront battle between Stenman-Fahey / Codrington and Livingstone / Smith looked promising as they reached the 'HILL' but Earl of March's Van Wyk pulled away on the downhill and then powered away from the lead pack coming up and ran unchallenged over the final kilometre to post an 8 second victory over Stenman-Fahey. Smith held off a fast closing Codrington to claim the bronze. The return to form of Tara Robinson gave the Gryphons 3 scorers in the top 10 to help secure the victory, with 51 points. Earl of March packed their remaining scorers within 20 seconds and four places of each other (21st-25th) to narrowly slip past Canterbury for second (71-74) . Franco Ouest (107) picked up the final OFSAA qualifying spot.

Cameron Slupieks (Colonel By) put his lack luster performance from last weeks East Conference Meet behind him. 11th in the East last week, almost 2 minutes behind Kinahan (Lisgar), Slupieks led from the gun and covered the 5220m course almost 3 minutes faster than last week. After Slupieks, things unfolded pretty much as expected, with West Champ Walia (SRB) finishing second, Bernst (Glebe) claiming the bronze and Kinhan (Lisgar) 4th. Slupieks wasn't the only one to improve his placing as a couple of Bernst's teammates had big improvements as well to help Glebe steal the team title from East Champs Beatrice Desloges. Ford moved up to 15th (17th @ West) and Sporell 22nd (28th @ West) and Marshall finished 25th to give Glebe a 20 point victory. Lisgar edged out Louis Riel (98-100) for third.

Illness may have slowed Earl's top runner, Niemi (17th), but her Lion's teammates certainly picked up the slack, including a big run from last weeks #5 Pappas who improved from 35th at the West to 15th at the NC Meet and the LIONS cruised to the largest victory of the day, 43 points (54-97), over West runner up Sir Robert Borden. Glebe and All Saints made it 4 for 4 for the West Conference, finishing 3rd and 4th respectively. The lead pack remained tightly bunched, even up the 'HILL' as all the key players stayed in touch until the final kiolmetre. West Champ Robertson (Brookfield) pulled away slowly to post an 11 second victory over East Champ Scheunert (Garneau), with East runner up Grimes earning the bronze.

What is it with Junior Boys?? At the pre-OFSAA - Haw-X Invite, all runners stayed on course except for the lead juniors, who turned and headed off down the wrong side of the Dome. Despite running the course correctly last week, Howard led his teammate off in the wrong direction at the exact same spot. This time however, the mistake was due to marshall error, as some student spectators, thinking it might be funny to mess up the runners, moved a rope across the course, directing the two AY runners down the wrong path. The marshalls quickly corrected the mistake and the runners corrected the error, but lost some time. Despite losing his lead, Howard reclaimed the lead in the final kilometre and ran to a 7 second victory, while Jarvis, 2nd at the time of the misdirection, finished 5th. Lycee Claudel's Trapeau, claimed the silver ahead of last weeks East Champ McHugh (Hillcrest). Glebe placed all 4 runners within a minute of each other to earn the narrowest margin of victory over East Champs Immaculata (95-99). South Carleton edged Woodroffe for 3rd (109-111).

The Senior Girls race produced the same finish it had a week ago at the West Conference, with Emma Galbraith (Franco Ouest) winning her third consecutive XC gold. Last year's JG Champion Rhead (Glebe) was second while O'Higgins (Bell) won the bronze. East Champ Lindsay Kary (St. Matt) was 4th. Rhead's teammate Derksen improved upon her 8th place finish at the West, placing 7th and Glebe had it's top two in before Colonel By's Weidemann, which proved to be enough to defeat the Cougars for the SG title (66-79). Bell was third with 88, while Ashbury grabbed the fourth and final OFSAA qualifying spot.

The Senior Boys lead pack stayed together through the first couple of kilometres, with 10 - 12 athletes all tightly bunched as they went off down the paths towards the hill. Defending OFSAA Champion Yves Sikubwabo made his move just past the half-way mark, and by the time they came back out of the trails, Yves had a comfortable 15 second lead, which he stretched out to 48 seconds by the end of the race, setting his 5th course record in as many races this season. Alex Behre (Woodroffe) made a strong move through the final 1K loop in the woods to pull away from the chase pack which included Donald (Nepean), Marhsall (Glebe) and Day (Holy Trinity). Only Donald could stay close, while Day, who fell off the group earliest used his powerful finishing kick to mow down Marhsall in the homestretch. Glebe placed all four scorers in the top 17, while west rival Nepean placed 4 in the top 18 to finish 1 - 2 respectively (36-45) and post the two lowest team scores of the day. Colonel By was a close third (56), while Merivale (110) grabbed the final qualifying spot.

NC Preview

The National Capital Cross Country Championships are set to go this Thursday at the Hornet's Nest; the final race in preparation for the OFSAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 5th. As hosts, this year 4 teams and 6 individuals will qualify for OFSAA, making for some exciting races to come.

The 4th will figure in HUGE!!

Cross Country is a team sport! While top runners will battle for individual glory, in many cases, it will be the fourth runner who decides the standings in the team competitions. While the top runners are often spread out with large gaps and few points to pick up by gaining a spot, or two, often it is up to runners 3 and 4, who can have a great race and lower their team's score dramatically.

Midget Girls

The top teams are very similar here with a powerful 1-2 punch and #3 and #4 a couple minutes back. Canterbury won the East with Codrington 1st and Stenman-Fahey 2nd, while Glebe went 1 & 3 in the West (Livingstone and Smith). Canterbury's Macdonell and Heath ran 15:18 and 15:23 at the East, while Glebe's Beale and Barrett were both timed in 15:21. Look for a tight finish between these four atheltes. Glebe also has Robinson in reserve (4th at the Gryphon Open, but forced to walk the West due to injury), but it remains questionable whether or not she be healthy enough to contribute. This race could come right down to the wire, as both teams are projected to score about 56 points. It could well be whichever team gets runner #4 across the line first. Earl of March looks to have a solid hold on third, with Franco Ouest, Bell and Ashbury looking for that final OFSAA spot.

The individual race should come down to a tight battle between Livingstone and Codrington with the Earl's Van Wyk also in the mix. Codrington outkicked Livingstone at the Gryphon Open, but both Livingstone and Smith got the better of her at the HawX meet two weeks ago.

Midget Boys

Expect a replay of the East Conference Championships as Beatrice Desloges should be able to run to a comfortable victory. The Louis Riel vs. Lisgar battle should tighten up in the larger field for second spot. The Rebelles posted a 7 point margin of victory over the Lords, but with individual contender Kinahan (Lisgar) putting distance between himself and Riels 1 - 2 combo of Plante and Pribaz, there will not be much left to separate these two teams, as three and four for both teams will only be a few places apart. West Champs Glebe will hope to claim the 4th qualifying spot.

West Champ Arjun Walia (SRB) looked comfortable running to a 20 second victory over Glebe's Bernst, who ran the same time as East Champ Kinahan, albeit in much less agreeable conditions. Consistency seems to be the missing ingredient as Kinahan, Bernst, Denham (Beatrice Desloges) and Slupeiks (Colonel By) have all beaten each other, anywhere ranging from 10 - 45 seconds, at some point in time during the season. Ah the unpredictability of midgets!

Junior Girls

Nowhere is the importance of the fourth runner more evident that in the Junior Girls race. While West Champs Earl of March have three with top 10 potential (Neimi, Kavalsar and Kaminski), their #4 (Jin or Pappas) will likely be in the 50's. Most of the top contenders will have their fourth runner back in the 50 - 60's where precious seconds can mean a big jump in finishing place. Borden looks to be the Earl's closest challenger as they have the top #4 runner of the contending teams in So, who placed 28th in the West. Glebe will attempt to repeat the 1, 2, 3 finish from the West Conference, with Beatrice Desloges very close on their heels. Whichever team can get the biggest run out of the fourth and final scorer will ensure a place on the OFSAA starting line.

While Robertson (Brookfield) missed most of the season coming back from injury she was back in time to defend her West Conference title and should be able to repeat the effort at the NC meet. East Champion Scheunert (Garneau) held off West runner up Ridley's (Glebe) late charge at the Pirates Invite for a 1 second victory, while Grimes (Hillcrest) and Farrell (John McCrae) will also look to crack the top three. This race should produce the tightest top 5 finishers of the day.

Junior Boys

The talent in the Junior Boys is all up front in individual runners without strong supporting casts, so this race should produce the highest score for any winning team. East Champs Immaculata look to be the team to beat. While they lack a top contender, they find themselves evenly placed, well in the top half of the field. Woodroffe and Glebe knotted at 50 in the West meet, with Woodroffe getting the nod based on the higher 4th place finisher, but the larger field may favour the Gryphons, who had 3 ahead of Woodroffes' tightly bunched 2 - 4.

East Champ David McHugh will look to make it three victories in three weeks on the OFSAA course. McHugh won the HawX Invitational and the East meet over the last two weeks. Defending OFSAA silver medalist, Jarvis (AY Jackson) has been out with injury, but returned to run comfortably behind teammate Howard to reverse the order of finish from last years West and NC meet.

Senior Girls

East Champs Colonel By lost the narrowest of battles last year to Nepean for the NC title, but although they will not score as well this year, look to be the class of the field. Only West Champs Glebe will be close and have a chance to unseat the Cougars. Colonel By's 1-2 punch of Morris / Sims will be countered by Bell's O'Higgins / Klus, and Glebe's Rhead / Derksen. The big difference will be the 3 - 4 runners, with CB having their final scorers around 20th, Glebe's close to the 30's and Bell back near the 50's. Beatrice Desloges with only 30 seconds separating their top 3, but #4 in the high 50's should be have a strong enough squad to challenge Bell and earn a ticket to OFSAA.

Emma Galbriath (Franco Ouest) will look to win her 3rd consecutive gold at the National Capital Meet. She was pushed hard to the line by Rhead (Glebe) for her narrowest victory against NC competition. East Champ Kary (St. Matt) ran unchallenged to win the east and should be able to challenge both Rhead and Galbraith for the top spot on the podium.

Senior Boys

Defending Champs Glebe only lost one scoring runner from last years NC Championship team and have the upfront talent and depth to secure a second consecutive NC title. Glebe placed 7 runners in the top 19 at the West and will likely have all 4 scorers in the top 15 at the NC meet. East Champs Colonel By's trio of Richardson, Saville, and Zhu finished 1 - 2 - 3 in the East, but will have to get a big run from their 4th to beat Nepean for second. Nepean has Donald who will contend for a medal and a 2 - 4 separated by less than 15 seconds that should all crack the top 20.

Defending OFSAA gold medalist Sikubwabo (Glebe) is the class of the field, but the intersting battle will be for the remaining medals. Behre (Woodroffe) looked to have second in the West, but found himself cutting the corner too tightly and ending up on the wrong side of the barricades coming down the finishing stretch. Day's (Holy Trinity) finishing speed carried him past Donald just before the line with Behre, after correcting his mistake a few seconds back. Look for another close finish from these boys to bring the 2011 NC Championships to an exciting close.

West Conference Cross Country Championships

Glebe Collegiate was the big winner at the 2011 West Conference Championships, winning the Overall, Boys and Girls Aggregates, while winning, or sharing victory, in 5 of the 6 races. Glebe won the Midget Girls, Midget Boys, Senior Girls and Senior Boys categories to score a perfect 40 points (best 4 of 6) in the Overall Aggregate.

Woodroffe prevented Glebe from sweeping the boys races by eeking out the narrowest of victories in the Junior Boys race. Both Woodroffe and Glebe scored 50 points in the race, but Woodroffe's fourth (Abdi) placed 16th, three spots ahead of Glebe's fourth (Uhthoff).

On the women's side, Earl of March posted a 6 point victory over Sir Robert Borden (49-55) to win the Junior Girls race. Glebe was third with 65 points.

Glebe's Sikubwabo kept his streak alive, setting his fourth course record in as many races this season, covering the 7.3 k of the windy, muddy course in 23:53, 23 seconds faster than the winning time at Haw-X Invitational, the first race held on the OFSAA course.

East Conference Championships

Colonel By and Beatrice Desloges share the East Conference title with Colonel By taking the Boys Aggregate and Beatrice Delsoges capturing the girls.

Colonel By won the Senior Boys, sweeping the medals, with Richardson, Saville and Zhu finishing 1-2-3 respectively. They also placed 2nd to Immaculata in the Junior Boys race to win the Boys title with 18 points, 4 points ahead of Lisgar (3rd - MB and 2nd - SB). Beatrice Desloges, who won the MB race was third with 11 points.

On the Girls side Beatrice Desloges won the Junior Girls, was second in the Senior race to Colonel By and placed 4th in the Midget Girls race, which was won by Cantebury, for 22 points. Colonel By, Lisgar and Ashbury all tied for 2nd with 14 points.

Haw-X Country Invitational

Small but talented fields toed the line at the Haw-X Country Invitational which served as the first tune up races to be run on the course that will be used for the Conference, NC and ultimately the 2011 OFSAA XC Championships. While teams came from as far as St. Catherine's and Hamilton, very few Ottawa schools attended the meet, likely due to the meet being on a Saturday. One meet official commented, "It's a shame when we have a meet of this calibre here on Ottawa that we can't get more support from our NCSSAA schools." Those who did not attend missed out on some quality races.

Thousand Islands (Brockville) dominated the girls side, winning all three titles and also the Senior Boys title enroute to the Overall Aggregate. Frontenac (Kingston) and Sir Winston Churchill (St. Catherine's) won the Midget Boys and Junior Boys respectively. The top NC performance was turned in by the Glebe MG who placed a close 2nd (32-45) and the Lisgar JG who placed 3rd.

Hillcrest's David McHugh took advantage of the 4 athletes in front of him running off course to post a 4 second victory and brought home the NC's only individual gold medal. Emma Galbraith placed second in the Senior Girls race, while McHugh's teammate, Kelsey Grimes was a bronze medalist in the Junior Girls race along with Lycee Claudel's Alec Trapeau in the Junior Boys race.

Louis Riel Invitational

The Louis Riel Invitational wrapped up three back to back days of racing for National Capital Schools. Colonel By was perfect (10 points) in the Senior Girls race, helping the Cougars to the Girls, and Overall Aggregates. Meet Director Seb Lalonde led his Rebelles to the Boy's Aggregate title and a tie for second place overall with Bell.

Turkey Trot

All Saints finished second overall, winning the Girl's Aggregate (SG 1st and JG 2nd) at the Turkey Trot in Kemptville on Thursday, Oct 6th. Notre Dame (Carleton Place) was the overall winner.

Kayla Jones (Nepean) was the lone NC Champion of the day, winning the SG race.

Pirates Invitational

Only a few NC schools made the trip to Brockville this year for the Pirates Invitational but though the numbers were few, the performances were outstanding. Glebe placed 3rd overall in the 30 school meet with 25 points, while Beatrice Desologes was 7th with 15 points.

Yves Sikubwabo (Glebe) opened the day with his third victory in as many races this season. Yves ran unchallenged from the gun to a comfortable 54 second victory and claiming his second course record of the season, covering the 7200m course in 22:12. Philip Marshall (Glebe) also cracked the top 5 to help Glebe to a 2nd place finish in the Senior Boys race behind hosts Thousand Islands.

Charlene Rhead made it 2 for 2 for Glebe in the Senior races, winning the Senior Girls race, posting the third fastest time ever run on over the 5K course (18:58).

In the Junior Girls race, Garneau's Maggie Schuenert held off a hard charging Kendra Ridley (Glebe) by 0.2 seconds to claim silver, 24 seconds back of OFSAA MG 800m champion Nicole Armstrong (Sydenham). The Glebe Junior Girls matched their Senior Boys team finish, placing 2nd behind Thousand Islands, while Beatrice Desloges earned the bronze.

Several more Ottawa schools will see action tomorrow at the Turkey Trot in Kemptville and Friday at the Louis Riel Invitational.

Gryphon Open

Glebe Collegiate had a strong showing at their home meet, winning the Overall and Girls' Aggregates, while sharing the Boys' Aggregate with Renfrew Collegiate.

Glebe won the Midget Girls with a solid score of 18, placing 3 runners in the top 4 (Livingstone 2nd, Smith, 3rd, and Robinson 4th), the Senior Girls and placing second in the Junior Girls category.

On the Boys side, Glebe won the Senior Boys race, behind Sikubwabo and Marshall who placed 1st and 3rd respectively, the Junior Boys and placed third in the Midget Boys race, while Renfrew won the Midget Boys title and was runner up to Glebe in the Junior and Senior races.

In the elementary races, Franco Cite, paced by individual champion Marshall, won the Girls race while Rideau Valley won the boys.

NC Harriers Open Season

Glebe CI was the first NC school to see action in the 2011 XC season at the Trinity Invitational, on a sunny, warm, Sept. 21st.

Three athletes made the trip to Port Hope with Alexa Livingstone placing 7th in the Midget Girls race, Charlene Rhead 6th in the Senior Girls and defending OFSAA Champion Yves Sikubwabo winning the Senior Boys race.

Sikubwabo became the first athlete to break 20 minutes on the 6.8K course, running 19:57 to slice almost a full minute off Matt Hughes' (20:56, 2007) previous record. Jeremie Bourget (Theriault - Timmins, 20:24) and Ben Flanagan (St. Mary's - Kitchener, 20:33) who ran together with Sikubwabo for the first 4 kilometers also broke the previous record.

Other NC schools will open their seasons tomorrow at the Louis Riel Cookie Run.

2011 Cross Country Set to Kick Off

2011 Big year for NC Region

National Capital athletes have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming cross country season. Not only will there be the usual series of races, but this year the OFSAA Championships will be hosted out at the Hornet's Nest. This race will bring together the top XC athletes in the province and the pre-OFSAA meet (the Haw-X-Country Invitational), will likely draw record numbers of athletes and spectators.

OFSAA Report

Despite four consecutive days of rain and windy cold temperatures leading up to the OFSAA Championships in Etobicoke, race day dawned clear and sunny and set the stage for a great day of racing. The mostly flat course, with one significant hill (although the junior and senior boys got it twice) was in great condition despite the rain and many National Capital athletes ran great races.

Sikubwabo earns Gold, Jarvis nabs Silver

The day began with NC's midget girls champ Olivia Robertson (Brookfield) just missing the podium. Robertson found herself in a great position at the top of the hill (7th) and continued to move through the field to finish 4th, just 6 seconds out of the bronze medal position.

Alec Jarvis (AY Jackson) ran a brilliant race. Content to stay with with the chase pack as several athletes who went out too hard were eaten up by the pack. Jarvis bounced around in the chase pack, at times being as high and third and as far back as 7th between the 3 and 4 K mark. Over the final 600m Jarvis made his move and was only two seconds back of gold medalist Elmhirst (Bill Crothers) at the line.

Glebe's Yves Sikubwabo ended the day with a predictable bang. The showdown between Sikubwabo and Eamonn Kichuk (Bill Crothers) never materialized as Kichuk had an off day, placing 34th and was never in contention. It was Connor Darlington (RS McLaughlin) who took the race out hard and at one point had a 30m lead on Sikubwabo as the field spread out very quickly with the fast pace. Sikubwabo played it patient waiting until just past the 4K mark, as Darlington started to struggle to move into the lead. Sikubwabo ran unchallenged over the final 3K to post a 12 second victory over hard closing Rob Denault (Aurora) and Xavier King (Pickering). Darlington faded to 4th.

No NC teams on the podium

No NC teams managed to achieve a top 8 finish this year, with Glebe coming the closest placing 9th in the Junior Girls race with Charlene Rhead (12), Alexa Derksen (46), Rowan Harris (108), Emily Copeland-Dinan (191) and Heather Kirby (206) combining for a total of 358, 40 points shy of 8th place Lo Ellen Park (Sudbury).

National Capital Championships

Glebe Collegiate captured the Girls, Boys and Overall title at the Hornet's Nest in the 2010 National Capital Cross Country Championships. Glebe scored 32 points (best 4 of 6) to outpace Nepean (19) and Colonel By (18).

Glebe won the SB race and was 3rd in both the MB and JB races to win the boys aggregate with 22 points, 10 points clear of second place Merivale (2nd in SB, 4th in JB). In the Girls Aggregate, Glebe won the Junior Girls title and was 6th in the girls for 12 points, a mere one point ahead of Nepean (1st - SG, 7th - MG) and Colonel By (2nd - SG, 5th - MG).

Midget Girls
Pre-race favorites Earl of March suffered a major blow today as they did not have uniforms! OFSAA and NC By-laws state that "runners must wear identical school uniforms" and uniforms are defined as "tops that have the school name, nickname or school crest." This left the door wide open to West runner up All Saints who stepped up and won, placing two girls in the top 6 (Borasto, 4th and Howard 6th), while East Champs Hillcrest took the second OFSAA qualifying spot.
In the individual race, Grimes (Hillcrest), Farrell (John McCrae), and Robertson (Brookfield) stayed closely packed until the "HILL" at which point Robertson took charge. Farrell hung on until the end but could not match Robertson's finishing speed. Farrell's teammate, Viau, placed 5th to take the third individual OFSAA qualifying spot.

Midget Boys
The return of Matheson-Fitchett was enough to propel AY Jackson to their first XC team title, as Jarvis and Howard finished 1-2 yet again to secure the victory for AY over last week's West Champs Nepean. Nepean ran with a tightly bunched top 3 to hold off a late charging Glebe by 6 points to book their ticket for Etobicoke.
The lead pack of Jarvis, Howard and Abdulkarim (Gloucester) stayed pretty close until just before the "HILL" when Jarvis made his move. Abdulkarim held on for 3rd, while Thompson (Samuel Genest) and Lebouef (Sir Wil) finished 4th and 5th for the remaining individual OFSAA qualifying spots.

Junior Girls
Last year's Champs, Glebe, repeated in convincing fashion defeating the 2009 Midget Champs from Bell by a comfortbale 23 points.
Kary (St. Matt), led from the gun and tried to run away from the field early opening up as much as a 50m lead over chasers Klus (Bell) and Rhead (Glebe). Rhead made her move just before the "HILL" (funny how this little 'bump' in the course figures so prominently in the races), leaving Klus and going after Kary. Rhead, runner up four times this season (Gryphon Open, TISS, HawX and West Conference), outkicked Kary down the final stretch to move to the top of the podium for the first time this season. Klus hung on for third, while Derksen (Glebe) finished fourth. Domitrovits (St. Pius) and Hayes (Mother Teresa) grabbed the last two individual OFSAA qualifying spots.

Junior Boys
South Carleton, Louis Riel and Glebe were back and forth all race long in the team race, with South Carleton holding the largest lead (8 points over Glebe) at the 2K mark. By the 4K mark, Louis Riel had narrowed the lead to 5 points as Glebe fell out of contention. With only 200m to go, South held the narrowest of leads over Louis Riel, but Louis Riel's Louis-Seize and Houlton both outkicked several runners down the home stretch to give defending MB Champs Louis Riel a 3 point victory.
McCleery (South Carleton) sensed he had a chance to beat defending Midget Boys champ Day (Holy Trinity) and took charge at about the half way point opening up a small lead as Day, struggleing with stomach issues had to pull over to 'lose some of his lunch' heading across the ravine. Day hung tight and used his finishing speed to power away from McCleery down the stretch, while Sukunda (Louis Riel) finished strongly in third, pulling away from Maxwell (St. Paul) over the final metres. O'Neill-Dee, came from a long ways back to finish 5th and pick up the third individual OFSAA qualifying spot.

Senior Girls
It doesn't get much closer than this! Pre-race favorites Colonel By and Nepean made the promise of an exciting senior girls race come to life as both teams combined for a total of 8 of the first 14 runners to cross the line. West Champs Nepean eeked out a narrow 2 point victory (34-36) over East Champs Colonel By. In fact, both teams fourth runners crossed the line at almost the same time (within 1 second). Had Seale (Colonel By) managed to beat Nepean's Van Walraven, both teams would have been tied at 35, with the win going to Colonel By based on the higher fourth place finisher.
Galbraith (Franco Ouest) ran a strong race to post a 30 second victory over East runner up Kathryn Tuck (Colonel By), who reversed the tables to beat last week's East Champ Kanz (Garneau). Bell's O'Higgins ran a strong race to finish 4th and claim the last spot on the bus to Etobicoke.

Senior Boys
West Champs Glebe and runner up Merviale claimed the top two spots again this week with Glebe posting an 18 point victory (36-54). East Champs Colonel By lost #3 (Zhu) as he fell coming down one of the steep muddy hills at the midway point of the race, otherwise they may have challenged for 2nd, but instead placed a distant third.
Sikubwabo (Glebe) led from the gun and ran unchallenged to a 1:37 victory over Palamar (Merivale) who was just as impressively over a minute ahead of the chase pack of Smith (SRB), Berhe (Woodroffe), Marhsall (Glebe) and East Champ Saville (Colonel By). Berhe pulled away from Smith and Marshall down the stretch, with Saville finishing 6th for the final OFSAA individual spot.

National Capital Championship Preview

The National Capital Region has a tradition of sending several strong individuals to the OFSAA Championships, but has very few team medals to show. While hopefully, we'll be able to break the team curse (no NCSSAA team has ever won an OFSAA team title) soon, there are several individuals to watch at the upcoming NC Champs that could contend for a medal.

The top 2 teams and the top 3 individuals (not on a qualifying team) will qualify for the OFSAA XC Championships in Etobicoke, Nov 6th.

Midget Boys
Although AY Jackson dominated all NC competition at the HawX Open, they struggled, missing #3 Matheson-Fitchett at West (injury), placing 2nd to a tight grouped Nepean team. No one can match AY's 1-2 punch of Jarvis and Howard, with Jarvis finishing over a minute ahead of everyone but his teammate at the West and HawX Meets. Nepean has a tight packed top three, but then over 2 minutes back to #4. If Matheson-Fitchett can get back in form AY will be tough to beat.

Individuals to watch: This is Jarvis' race. He has been untouched in both races this season winning by comfortable margins at West and at the NC site. Howard will fight for silver with Abdulkarim (Gloucester) while Thompson (Samuel Genest), Vervolet (St Joe) Horvath (Sacred Heart) and Kyte (All Saints) should fight it out for the remaining individual OFSAA spots.

Midget Girls

Two very similar teams will battle for supremacy at Green's Creek. Both West Champs Earl of March and East Champs Beatrice Desloges have a few girls with top 10 potential, a closely packed top three and a fourth place runners that could finish very close to each other. All Saints packs all four runners within a minute, but needs to have all four girls move up to upset the Earl or Beatrice Desloges. BD gets the nod based on having run over the NC course twice this year.

Individuals to watch: Individual hopefuls will dominate the lead pack in the Midget Girls race. West Champ Olivia Robertson (Brookfield) and runner up Kyrsten Farrell (John McCrae) have each beaten each other once this season (Farrell winning the showdown between the two a week earlier at the HawX Open over the NC course). Farrell's teammate Viau will have to battle with East Champ Grimes (Hillcrest), Blanchette (Cantebury) and Scheunert (Garneau) for the remaining spot.

Junior Boys

'09 Midget champs Louis Riel hope to repeat this year in the Junior race and have been in fine form so far, as they are undefeated against NC competition this season, beating runner up Garneau by 78 points (21-99) at the East Conference Champs. South Carleton has bolstered their team by moving up top Midget runners Dysart and Lewis, whom along with McCleery (2nd in West), Olsen and Labelle hope to improve on their 2nd place finish to Louis Riel in '09. Outside of these two teams, only Merivale and Glebe (who only finished 2 points behind Louis down at TISS) have a chance at cracking the top two for one of the 2 OFSAA berths.

Individuals to watch: Defending Champ Day (Holy Trinity) is the heavy favorite and should be followed to the line by McCleery and East Champ Sukunda (Louis Riel). With two of these three likely to qualify on teams, a top 5 finish could book a trip to OFSAA. Look for Maxwell (St. Paul) and Francki (Sir Wil) to round out the top 5.

Junior Girls

Last years Junior champs Glebe keep three of their top 4 (whom had moved up from Midget last year) and return as the favorites to repeat in 2010. Over the first three runners Glebe held the narrowest of margins, only a single point, over 2009 Midget Champs Bell at the West, but had #4 and #5 runners almost a minute ahead of Bell's fourth scorer, and #6 and #7 just behind.

East Champ Louis Riel scored low at the East meet, but will have a tough time unseating either of these two teams and may be challenged for third by South Carleton.

Individual's to watch: Defending champ Klus (Bell) will rely on her sit and kick tactics to try and win her third race of the season. Glebe's Rhead, who has placed 2nd in all 4 of her races this year will look to improve upon that result, as she has been outkicked by Klus in her last two races. Perhaps East Champ Kary will keep the past honest enough to nullify Klus' finishing speed. Kary won easily at the East meet, although she twice had to backtrack and correct errors in running the course. Earlier this season she beat Rhead by a comfortable 20 seconds at the Gryphon Open. Once again, with 2 of these three likely to qualify on teams OFSAA spots will be up for grabs for Hayes (Mother Teresa) and Domitrovits (St. Pius X) with Derksen (Glebe) also with top 5 potential.

Senior Boys

Glebe has strengthened their Senior team with Rwandan Yves Sikubwabo and transfer Phil Marshall, who sat out the '09 season and is now eligible. Both Glebe and Colonel By have a strong 1-2 punch (Saville and Holstead for CB, 1-2 in the East) and the race will be decided by the #3 and #4 runners, Borish, Freda or Carranco for Glebe, Zhu, Ferguson or Bitar for Colonel By. Merivale led by Palamar, have a history of running strong at the BIG meets and could steal a spot should one of these two stumble.

Individuals to watch: Yves Sikubwabo of Glebe burst onto the NC XC scene just a week ago and made a very impressive debut winning the West by 1:29 over defending OFSSA junior silver medallist Palamar. East Champ Saville (Colonel By) should round out the top 3. Smith (SRB), Dysart (South Carleton) and Behre (Woodroffe) will fight for the remaining two qualifying spots with Marshall (Glebe) and Holstead (Colonel By) also capable of cracking the top 5.

Senior Girls

Nepean was the suprise of the Conference Meets placing all four scorers in the top 8 at the West Meet (2-5-6-8-13), while Colonel By dominated the East, with 3 in the top 6 (2-5-6) and then 3 more tightly packed about a minute back (16-19-21). With both upfront talent and depth, these two teams are a safe bet, although nothing is certain in XC. Franco Ouest and Osgoode will likely battle for third.

Individuals to watch: Emma Galbraith is the heavy favorite, having beaten East Champ Kanz (Garneau) by over 40 seconds over the NC course only a week ago. Kanz has managed to hold off Tuck (Colonel By) two consecutive weeks at the Green's Creek course. Nepean's Burrows, 2nd at West, has top 5 potential and O'Higgins (Bell), Bisson (Lycee Claudel) and Eryuzlu (All Saints) will fight it out for the final OFSAA qualifying spot.

Colonel By won the Girl's, Boy's and Overall Aggregates on a cool windy day at the East Conference Championships at the Hornet's Nest. Led by their senior teams, who captured the boys and girls senior team titles Colonel By defeated Beatrice Desologes 32 - 30 to capture the overall title.

The Senior Races were the talk of the day at the West Conference Cross Coutnry Championships.

Nepean's Senior Girls had a dominating performance placing all four scorers in the top 8, for the low team score of the day (21) and the largest margins of victory, 48 points ahead of runner up Franco Ouest, who was lead by individual Champ Emma Galbraith who ran to a 1:28 victory (19:27) over Nepean's Ruth Burrows.

In the Men's race, Yves Sikubwabo (above) defeated last years OFSAA JB silver medallist, Adam Palamar of Merivale, by 1:29 in a blistering course record time of 22:37 (old record 23:50, 2006) and led Glebe to a 29 - 43 victory over Merivale. Sikubwabo, a Rwandan refugee who came to Canada for the World Junior Track and Field Championships in July, only started school this past week, but made an immediate impression on all in attendance with his smooth stride and the huge smile he wore on his face the entire race.

Glebe Collegiate won the Girls, Boys and Overall Aggregates titles.

Haw-X Country Invitaional

Thousand Islands dominated the Haw-X Invitational winning all races except the Junior Boys, which was won by Louis Riel, in near perfect weather at the Hornet's Nest, proving you don't need pouring rain and tons of mud for a succesful XC Meet. Thousand Islands won with 58 out of 60 possible points, while Glebe Collegiate was the top NC school in the overall aggregate, placing 3rd with 16 points.

This was the final tune up meet of the season as teams now prepare for the Conference Championships to be held at Mooney's Bay (West, oct 20th) and the Hornet's Nest (East, Oct 21st) next week, leading up to the National Capital Championships.

Pirates Invitational

Two meets into the season and two days of pouring rain! The Pirates once again dominated their meet winning 5 of 6 race titles on route to the Boys, Girls and Overall Aggregates. NC runners were scarce this year, but turned in some solid performances, with Kathryn Tuck (Colonel By) winning the Senior Girls race and Charlene Rhead (Glebe) placing second in the Junior Girls.

2009 OFSAA Report

The 2009 OFSAA Cross Country Championships at Boyd Conservation Area in Woodbridge were certainly run under some tough conditions, and some of the toughest athletes, those from the National Capital region, had some outstanding performance. No OFSAA Championship in recent history has seen the amount of athletes in need of medical assitance that these Championships caused. While many were worried about the roughness of some of the terrain, it wasn't the terrain, but simply the toll the course exacted on the the athletes, along with, ironically, the first real nice XC weather we have had this fall. Warm sunny temperatures caused some to suffer from heat problems, one athlete passed out, fell and disolcated her hip, a spectator suffered a heart attack and, perhaps the most interesting story of the day, a Midget Girl was taken out by a collision with a frightened deer!

Brown Golden, Palamar earns silver

All Saints' Joanna Brown (right, with 150m to go) won the Senior Girls title at the 2009 OFSAA cross country championships while Adam Palamar (Merivale) took home the silver. Brown played it smart, electing to stay wide and out of trouble early in the race. Despite running a few extra metres the decision paid off as the lead group thinned out rather quickly and Brown was able to take control of the race. Brown had a comfortable lead by the time she reached "Killer Hill" and was unchallenged over the final 2K, running to the largest margin of victory (25 seconds) in any race.

Palamar, on the other hand, had lots of company in the junior boys race. A tight pack of 8 to 10 runners stayed close together for the first 3K and included, along with Palamar, Nepean's Scott Donald and Colonel By's Sebastien Saville, with Palamar doing much of the leading, including pushing the pace up "Killer Hill." (see photo at right, Saville on left, with Kichuk and Palamar) OFSAA 2008 Midget Champion Eamonn Kichuk pulled ahead in the final kiolmetre and only Palamar was able to stay close enough to make it interesting. Kichuk's 4 second margin of victory was the smallest margin of victory in any of the boys races. Donald held on to the lead pack long enough to earn a 6th place finish, while Saville faded a bit over the final 2K to finish 20th.

Glebe earns top 8 finish

Palamar's efforts helped his team to a ninth place finish overall, missing top 8 by a mere 16 points. Glebe Collegiate's Junior Girls, Charlene Rhead (22), Holly McCulloch (89), Alex Derksen (100), Elyssa Loewen (122), and Sophie Laflamme (212) combined to give Glebe 333 points and the National Captial Regions' only top 8 team finish.

2009 National Capital Cross Country Championships

Merivale won the Boy's Aggregate, while Nepean won the Girl's, enroute to sharing the Overall Aggregate. Each team scored 24 points to edge out Glebe with 22. All three teams had tied the previous week at the West Conference Meet. The Meet had some excellent performances and a few surprises to dish up, but the overriding story for the year will be H1N1. Early flu season decimated some teams chances, and wiped out almost half of one teams entire roster. Of the 922 athletes entered in the meet only 647 managed to make it to the finish line.

Midget Girls
Borden's girls were the first to be effected by the flu. Despite their top 3 running very well (4-7-10) led by Kayla Adenok, they were without a forth scoring runner. Bell had some adversity to overcome as well as their #4 had badly sprained an ankle at a soccer match, but without Borden in the team competition ran to an easy victory 63-113 over South Carleton. Bell's Samantha Klus broke away early and was never seriously challenged in running to a 6 second victory over Bridget Hayes (Mother Teresa), with East Champ Lindsay Kary (St. Matthew) capturing the bronze.

Midget Boys
West Champs Glebe was hit by the flu early, but had #3 back in the line up for the race, but he cleary wasn't recovered. Despite top 20 potential, Nathaniel Sneyd-Dewar struggled home in 73rd place, leaving the door open for East Champs Louis Riel, whose one through four all ran exceptionally well, led by Zach Sukunda (4th) to hold off West runner up South Carleton, led by Kyle McCleery (2nd) 78-96. Mickey Day (Holy Trinity) won the race in 17:07 for a 20 second victory over McCleery, while Rubin Kataki (Merviale) earned the bronze.

Junior Girls
The most impressive win of the day came from the Glebe Junior Girls who did almost exactly the same thing as they had done the previous week packing all 5 runners in the top 17 places, paced by Charlene Rhead who earned the bronze to finish with 40 points. Individual Champion Emma Galbraith led her Franco Ouest team to the second OFSAA qualifying spot, while Mel Campeau (Louis Riel) earned the individual Silver medal.

Junior Boys
Merivale's junior boys packed their 2 through 4 within 50 seconds (10-15-18) behind individual Champ Palamar to capture the Junior Boys team title with 44 points. East Champs Beatrice Desloges earned the second spot with 69 points. Nepean's Scott Donald followed Palamar to the line for the silver with Colonel By's Sebastien Saville earning the bronze.

Senior Girls
Despite missing their top runner (Beanlands), last years OFSAA junior girls bronze medalists Colonel By managed to steal the Senior Girls race by a single point from Nepean 64-65. All Saints' Joanna Brown, the defending OFSAA silver medalist once again started conservatively and steadily moved through the field, taking over just before the halfway point and running to a comfortable 21 second victory over Heather Slinn (Hillcrest) and Isabelle Kanz (Garneau).

Senior Boys
Borden made up for the disappointment at the beginning of the day by ending it with a bang. Three of the four Borden runners improved on their placings from the West meet despite the larger fields (6-8-22-24 vs. 5-12-14-23) to hand Merivale their first defeat of the season against NC competition 54-60. Kieran Day matched the victory of his younger brother defeating East Champ Andrew Towle (Ottawa Tech) while Colonel By's Ian Holstead captured the bronze.

2009 National Capital Championships Preview

In the mid-1990's Sean Clancy recognized potential in several of his runners. Problem was they ranged from grade 9 through grade 13, and no one team would be all that strong because he lacked depth in each division. Clancy made the decision to move all his runners up to Senior to make one strong team and his decision paid off with an OFSAA silver medal. There are at least three coaches this year who plan to steal a page from Clancy's playbook and although it may not translate into an OFSAA medal, it should certainly make things interesting at the 2009 NCSSAA Cross Country Championships.

Midget Girls
West Champs Bell and West runner-up Sir Robert Borden created some excitement tying with 42 points at the West Conference Champs. Bell has indivdual favorite Samanta Klus and Bridget Irwin (4th) up front and then two more Glatt (18th) and Mason (19th) about 2 minutes back. Borden had 3 girls in the top 7, Adenok (3rd), Filipovich (5th) and Sitka (7th), with a 4th, de Souza (27th) about 2:30 off the front pack. In the larger NC meet, Borden gets the nod based on 3 with top 10 potential. Only 30 seconds seperated Glatt and Mason from de Souza, but almost one minute seperated them from Sitka. In a larger field that should create the points needed for Borden to secure victory. Bell's key to victory will be to get Glatt and Mason as close to Sitka as possible, while Borden's hopes rest with the strength of their front three and de Souza keeping the gap between her and Mason as small as possible. East Champs Gisele Lalonde tightly packs all four runners within a minute , led by Hamel Touchette (8th) and McKenzie (9th), but all four will need to run BIG, if they hope to upset either of the favorites and earn a birth to OFSAA.

Individuals to watch: Klus (Bell) and Lindsay Kary (St. Matt's) are the class of the field. Both girls have been within 2 seconds of each other twice this season, with Klus winning both match-ups. Hillary Cooper (Osgoode), Magdeline Sims (Colonel By), Bridget Hayes (Mother Teresa) and Adenok (Borden) should battle it out for the bronze. With Klus and Adenok likely getting team births to OFSAA, it leaves three spots open in the top 5 to individuals, which should make things interesting.

Midget Boys
Glebe, South Carleton and Louis Riel will battle for the two spots available for the Big Dance. Glebe gets the nod up front based on their undefeated record against NC competition this year including beating South at the Gryphon, HawX, and West Conference Champs and victories over Louis Riel at the Pirates and HawX meet. Glebe's has been undefeated in Eastern Ontario with the exception of a small 24 point loss to powerhouse Thousand Island's at the Pirates Meet. Glebe has upfront talent in Foley (4th at West) and two tightly packed runners, Sneyd-Dewar and Freda just over a minute back with #4 Wilson another 1:30 off the pace. South Carleton counters with medal contender McCleery and two others, Olsen and Labelle with top 20 potential, but a long gap back to #4 Helgason. Louis Riel beat South by a narrow margin at the HawX meet, but has since lost their #2 man McDonald. With their team runners placing similar to that of Glebe, they will rely on East Champ Sukunda to score low and hope that Weber and Louis-Seize can stay close to Glebe's Sneyd-Dewar and Freda, and South's Labelle while #4 Way has to get ahead of Wilson and create as large a gap as possible with Helgason in hopes of defeating South.

Individuals to watch: We should see a repeat of the West Conference Meet, with Mickey Day (Holy Trinity) the favorite, followed by McCleery, Rubin Kataki (Merivale) and Foley and Sukunda rounding out the top 5. Three of these boys have team qualifying potential so a top 5 finish should guarantee a trip to provincials.

Junior Girls
Here we see the first coach to learn a valuable lesson from Clancy. While Glebe lost two of it's top 4 from last years Midget Girls Championship team, Coach Dillabaugh decided to bump up his Midget's to run with the Juniors. While there were three with top 10 potential in the Midget race, an injury to one and a fourth that would be well back prompted Dillabaugh to pull a Clancy. Borden had handed the Gryphons a pretty solid defeat at the HawX Meet (although Derkson did not run due to injury), but it would have been tight. With these three Midget's running Junior and two returning OFSAA qualifiers, Glebe is the team to beat in the Junior race. Glebe packed all four scorers in the top 13 in the West led by grade 9 Charlene Rhead (3rd) and followed by McCulloch (6th), Derkson (10th) and Loewen (13th). #5 Copeland-Dinan was only 10 seconds back in 15th. That leaves Franco-Ouest and East Champs Lisgar to fight it out for the second spot. Franco's strength lies in that they really only have to score three runners in that #1 Galbraith is more than likely to score a single point. They need strong runs from Heroux and McConnell and #2 Pulfer to be ahead of Lisgar's front running duo of Williams and Van Leeuwen. Lisgar's hopes rest in #3 and 4, Zhao and Karyar keeping the gap between them and Van Leeuwen smaller than the gap between them and Heroux / McConnell.

Individuals to watch: Don't expect a repeat performance of last year, when Galbraith suffered her first defeat of the season to Jones (Nepean) and Eryuzlu (All Saints). Galbraith is the heavy favorite after winning the West, HawX, TISS and Gryphon Meets in convincing fashion. Jones only barely held off Rhead, while Eryuzlu should be able to keep herself in the running for a medal position. East champ Campeau (Louis Riel) and runner-up Hughes (St. Peter) should be in the mix for a medal as well.

Junior Boys
Merivale's Coach Pender is the second coach to play the bump athletes up a category game. Although his motivation is not the OFSAA medal podium, it might be enough to unseat East powerhouses Colonel By and Beatrice Desloges. In three meetings this year only 3 points have seperated CB and BD, Colonel By winning at TISS (108-109) and the HawX (44-44, 4th runners placing 17th and 19th respectively) and BD getting the win at the East Conference Meet (30-32). Both teams have upfront talent with individual medal threats in Saville (CB) and Plante (BD), and while BD has two more with top 10 potential (Chevrette and Smith), it is almost 2 minutes back to their #4 Hayes. CB meanwhile counters with their 2 through 4 (Maillet, Zheng and Shylakhtov) seperated by less than 50 seconds. Merivale's strength is with Palamar, the defending MB champion, and then a crew similar to that of CB, with 2 through 4 (Desgroselliers, Hayter and Buckland) seperated by less than 50 seconds. While Merivale lost by 20 at the HawX Meet to CB and BD, they were without Palamar, who took a knee to the head after getting tripped almost right off the start and did not finish and without Pender's grade 9 weapon Buckland. At the Gryphon Open early in the year, BD and Merivale tied with 56 points, but BD was given the nod based on the 4th runners (21-25), but with Palamar running easy (9th) and again no Buckland. The nod goes to Merivale, but anything can and likely will happen here. If BD can get a big run from Hayes, look out. Otherwise, it will be left to CB and Merivale to duke it out.

Individuals to watch: Palamar, Saville and Donald (Nepean) are the odds on favorites for medals, with Palamar likely to defend his title. Best let him do all the work in the West meet, sitting on Palamar for 4500m but couldn't match him over the final 500 as Palamar steadily pulled away. Plante will have his work cut out to break into the medals and will likely get a challenge from AY Jackson's Bursey and South Carleton's Beauvais.

Senior Girls
Colonel By should have had this one sewn up. With their Junior Girls winning bronze at OFSAA last year they were untouchable on paper heading into the season. Then Rachelle Beanlands got invited to a National Team Soccer try-out, causing her to miss the Conference Meet and making her ineligible for the NC meet. Coach Cote's depth will help the Cougars, but will it be enough to hold off West Champs Nepean. Nepean has two strong runners up front (Kemp and Moore) who should battle with Tuck for valuable points and two more about 2:00 - 2:30 back (Burton and van Walraven), while CB relies on Tuck to score low in the single digits, but it's 1:30 back to Winegarden and another 30 seconds to McPherdan and Seale. If Nepean can keep their top 2 close to or ahead of Tuck, it will make it very difficult for CB's #2 through #4 to gain enough points on Burton and van Walraven to win. Sacred Heart should have the depth to hold off Osgoode for the bronze, but neither has the strength to unseat Nepean or CB.

Senior Boys
Merivale gets the nod in the Senior race after having placed 5 in the top 15 at the West Meet led by Milliken (3rd) and Deek (4th). Meng (9th), Hutton (13th) and Kataki (15th) round out a Merivale squad who has been unbeaten this year against NC competition and are the defending NC Champs; only losing one scorer from last years squad. After that though, things get really interesting. Glebe had been the only team to come close to Merivale, but ran very poorly at the West Meet placing 4th behind Borden and Nepean. Louis Riel came up as a bit of a surprise to win the East. After losing Souleiman due to transfer, they didn't seem to miss a beat and captured the East with a convincing win over Hillcrest (40-76), led by Diaby (4th) and strong runs from Lefebvre (8th) and Viau (9th). Former Midget Champion Skupek-Martin (19th) rounds out the squad who could threaten for an OFSAA spot if he finds his form. Coach d'Arras is the final coach to try to bolster his squad with younger runners as he bumped up top junior Smith, who led all Borden runners in the West (6th), and had strong support from Bhatla (8th) with Omen (22) and Arnott (24) about a minute back. Glebe defeated a Smith-less Borden by 50 at the HawX meet only a week ago, while missing two of their top 4 (Wilson and Carranco), but then lost at the conference by 11 with them in the line up. Hooey (5th in West) and Wilson usually make a strong 1-2 punch that can only be matched by Merivale's Milliken and Deek, with Freda and Carranco about a minute back. This is eeriely familiar to Borden's team, so it should make for an exciting finish to the NC XC season. Thrown into this mix is Nepean who despite not having the up front talent, packs 5 runners within 45 seconds, Riordan (10th), Schroeder (16th), Sneeden (18th), McTaggart (20th) and Davis (21st). All are likely to place in between Borden's and Glebe's top 2 and three-four.

Individuals to watch: The NC meet will mark the first meeting of the season for East champ Towle (Ottawa Tech) and West Champ Day (Holy Trinity). Towle has yet to be pushed this year, winning all his races in convincing fashion. Canterbury's Chris Galley has top three potential and will likely battle with Colwell (West Carleton) and Holstead (Colonel By) for the bronze. 2009 East Conference Championships

Colonel By won the Overall and the Girls Aggregate at the 2009 East Conference Championships with 34 points, winning the Senior Girls race while taking runner up honours in the Midget Boys, Midget Girls and Junior Boys races. Louis Riel won the Boys Aggregate 20 points, with wins in the Midget and Senior Boys categories to place 2nd overall, while Gloucester was third overall, placing 2nd in the Junior Girls, third in the Senior Boys and 4th in the Junior Boys categories.

2009 West Conference Championships

Glebe Collegiate and Nepean High School tied for the Overall Aggregate, based on the four best scores in the six categories, at the West Conference Cross Country Running Championships Tuesday at the Kanata Recreation Centre. Merviale was 3rd with 25 points.

Glebe, Nepean and Merviale, tied for the Boys Aggregate (20 points), while Nepean took the Girls Aggregate (22 points) ahead of Franco-Ouest (14) and Glebe (11).

Midget Girls
Without Lindsay Kary (St. Matthew) for company, Bell's Samantha Klus had an easy time of it running to a comfortable 20 second victory. Klus led her teammates to a very close team title, edging out Sir Robert Borden. Both schools finished with 42 points, Borden being led by bronze medallist Kayla Adenok and placing three runners in the top 7, but Bell's 4th (Montana Mason) finished 19th, while Borden's 4th (Kyffin de Souza) finished 27th. NCSSAA tie-breaking procedures give the victory to the team with the higher placing 4th place finisher. Bridget Hayes (Mother Teresa) finished in the runner up position.

Midget Boys
Mickey Day (Holy Trinity) and Kyle McCleery (South Carleton) ran together stride for stride for most of the race before Day pulled away over the final 200m for a 4 second victory. Rubin Kataki (Merivale) finished 3rd. Colin Foley (Glebe) finished 4th to pace his team to a narrow 6 point victory over South Carleton.

Junior Girls
Emma Galbraith (Franco Ouest) pushed hard early and only Kayla Jones (Nepean) and Sheniz Eryuzlu (All Saints) where brave enough to try and match the pace, but both paid for it later. Galbraith went on to a 51 second victory while Jones held on to second with Charlene Rhead (Glebe) overtaking Eryuzlu with just over one kilometer to go to earn the bronze. Rhead's teammates placed 5 runners in the top 15 (3-6-10-13-15) for a 29 point victory over Franco Ouest.

Junior Boys
Nepean's Scott Donald hung on to Adam Palamar (Merivale) for nearly 5,600 m, but Palamar opened up some daylight around the finishing loop and down the stretch for an 8 second victory. Both boys were over 1:30 ahead of bronze medalist Drew Bursey of AY Jackson. Merivale Coach Jamey Pender had bumped up a few of his Midget runners to Junior in hopes of challenging East Conference powers Colonel By and Beatrice Desloges next week and his Marauders ran to a comfortable 30 point victory over Nepean.

Senior Girls
Joanna Brown (All Saints) and Emily Kemp (Nepean) ran together for the first half before Brown surged away to open a comfortable lead. Daniela Arrieta (Mother Teresa) made a huge move over the final kilometre, coming from almost 100m back to overtake Kemp and finish only 4 seconds behind Brown. Kemp's teammates placed 5 runners in the top 19 to take the team title over runner up Sacred Heart. (above: Brown #5, and Arrieta #253, at the bottom of the hill slowly work their way through the field).

Senior Boys
Kieran Day (Holy Trinity) made it two for two in the Senior race, matching his younger brother's victory earlier in the day, posting a 1:09 victory over Keith Colwell (West Carleton). Merivale's Sam Milliken finished 3rd while his teammates packed 5 runners in the top 15 (3-4-9-13-15) for the largest victory of the day, a 31 point win over Sir Robert Borden.

The East Conference Championships run tomorrow at the Hornet's Nest.

2009 Haw-X-Country Invitational

The Glebe Gryphons will head into the Conference Championships with confidence looking to defend their 2008 NCSSAA Cross Country Title after winning both the Boys and Girls Aggregates enroute to the Overall Aggregate at the Haw-X-Country Invitational. Glebe teams had a win (MB, JG), a second (MG, SB) and a third place (JB, SG) finish in each of the boys and girls categories to win with 24 points each and claim the overall title with 48 points.

Sir Robert Borden was the runner up in the Girls Aggregate with 12 points followed by Colonel By with 10. In the Boys Aggregate Merivale took second with 14 points, edging out Colonel By (12).

In the Overall Aggreate, Colonel By and Merviale tied for second behind the Gryphons, scoring 22 points, while Sir Robert Borden placed 4th with 16.

Conference Meets begin next week with the West Conference Meet on Tuesday, Oct 20th, followed by the East on Wednesday, Oct 21st. Good luck to all teams in their quest for OFSAA!

NC runners win individual Silver, Team Bronze in Sarnia

National Capital area athletes had some outstanding performances at the OFSAA Championships in Sarnia on Sat. Nov. 1st, 2008. Joanna Brown (All Saints CHS) claimed the silver medal in the Senior Girls race, while Colonel By won bronze in the Junior Girls team competition.

Jessica Parry (Catholic Central - London) tried to break the field early in the Senior Girls race. Parry, one of OFSAA's most decorated female athletes, had recently returned from India, where she had represented Canada at the Commonwealth Youth Games winning 2 silver medals (1500 m - 4:20; and 4 x 400 m). Not many expected anyone to be able to run with Parry, but Brown hung with her through the first two kilometres as they opened a small lead on the rest of the field, which quickly strung out behind them. Parry made a move to drop Brown going up the hill on the final loop, but Brown closed the gap and was shoulder to shoulder with Parry at 3K. Through the woods Brown made several attempts to get past Parry, but each time she was beaten back, literally, by Parry's elbows. With just over a kilometre to go Brown managed to get past Parry, but was unable to open enough gap to nullify Parry's finishing kick. Parry pulled away over the final 500 m, opening about a 10 m lead with 200 m to go. Brown fought back hard and while both girls recorded an identical 17:27.5 finishing time, was unable to catch Parry before the line.

Colonel By's junior girls had some adversity to overcome. Lead runner Kathryn Tuck rolled her ankle Friday evening and was still favoring the ankle Saturday morning. A good tape job, advil and some encouraging words from Coach Cote seemed to do the trick though, as Tuck raced to an 11th place finish. Her teammates, worried about their leader, realized they would all have to run well in order to improve on their 7th place finish from a year ago. Rachelle Beanlands placed 28th, followed by Rachel MacPherdan (91st) and Yolande Winegarden (99th) to give the Cougars a team total of 230, to edge out 2007 Midget Girls bronze medalists Thousand Islands (Brockville) by 12 points for the bronze medal.

National Capital Championships

Glebe Collegiate and Colonel By shared the 2008 Overall (32 points)** and Girls Aggregate Titles (22 points), while Glebe claimed the Boys Aggregate (17 points) edging Nepean by a single point. **(NC rules state that for the Overall Aggregate, the best 4 finishes are totaled to obtain the overall aggregate as opposed to all 6 in an attempt to make it possible for schools with smaller programs to have a shot at the title).

Midget Girls
Kayla Jones (Nepean), Emma Galbraith (Franco Ouest) and Sheinz Eryuzlu (All Saints) pushed the pace early in the race and the three girls opened up and early lead on the rest of the field. They maintained close contact with each other until the final 400m in which Jones took control and ran to victory, but was later disqualified due to failing to meet the minimum practice requirement. Eryulzu who over took Emma Galbraith down the final stretch ended up claiming the Gold, Galbraith the silver and Louis Riel's Stephanie Gould the bronze.

West Conference bronze medallists Glebe placed all four scorers within a minute of each other, led by Holly McCulloch (7th) for 63 points to edge out Earl of March (68), led by Allison Penner who was 5th for the team title.

Midget Boys
Midget Boys Champion Adam Palamar (Merivale) was not the only athlete to finish his race with only one shoe on, but he was the only one to win! Palamar lost his shoe in the "PIT" at the 2K mark but appeared unphased as a large pack of 7 boys stayed together for most of the first half of the race. Palamar held off the charge of Colonel By's Sebastien Saville for a 2 second victory. Devan Elijah-Henry (Woodroffe) outkicked Yannick Plate (Beatrice Desolges) for the bronze.

Colonel By (55) and Beatrice Desolges (69) repeated their one- two finish of a week ago at the East Conference Meet to secure OFSAA births, while West Champs Nepean (84) took the bronze.

Junior Girls
Kathryn Tuck (Colonel By), Isabelle Kanz (Garneau) and Rachelle Beanlands (Colonel By) led the Junior Girls race from start to finish. Tuck pulled away coming up the toboggan hill and ran to a comfortable 9 second victory over Kanz, with Beanlands holding on to third.

Colonel By's Junior Girls had the most dominant victory of the day, totalling a paltry 40 points, led by the 1-3 finish of Tuck and Beanlands. West Champs Nepean was given a scare by Glebe , who once again packed all four scorers inside one minute, but managed to hang on to a four point spread 96-100 for the second OFSAA qualifying spot.

Junior Boys
Louis' Riel's Mohamed Souleiman hammered from the gun to run away with the Junior Boys race, posting a 50 second victory over runner up Ian Holstead (Colonel By). Gabriel Urquhart tried to stay with Holstead and looked comfortable in third, but had to work hard to hold off a late charge from Jake Rupert (South Carleton) to secure the final OFSAA individual qualifying spot.

The absence of West Champ Cameron Duffin hurt Nepean's junior boys as West runner up Glebe stepped up to steal the title, once again placing all four scoring runners within 1:04, led by Chris Long (10th). Glebe posted a 15 point victory (70-85) over Nepean, with East Champs (Louis Riel), who was also missing one of their top runners, third (110).

Senior Girls
Joanna Brown let the pack stay close until about the 1K mark, after which she used the cover of the forest to open up a sizeable lead on the field. Lisa Giles (Merivale), Heather Slinn (Hillcrest) and Lindsay Anderson (Colonel By) made up the chase pack which hung together until the hill, after which Giles pulled away slowly, while Slinn held on to third.

The Senior Girls team competition was the tightest contest with only 9 points separating 1st and 3rd. Colonel By held the slimest of margins (a one point lead over Glebe) at the half way point, but Merviale's 2nd through 4th runners all gained valuable spots over the final K to secure victory with 72 points. Colonel By managed to hang on to second (76) while Glebe finished 3rd (81).

Senior Boys
Ian Donald (Nepean) ran a strong race from the gun to post a 27 second victory over runner-up Tim Huebsch (Gloucester). Tyson Loney (Earl of March) played it patient and moved through the field to finish 3rd, 15 seconds back of Huebsch.

Merivale made it 2 for 2 in the Senior races, as several runner on the apparent team champions from Nepean were disqualified for not meeting the minimum practice requirement. An early fall to #1 Kevin Berry, who finshed almost completely covered in mud, cost them valuable points and Nepean had appeared to eeked out a one point victory (53-54) before learning of the DQ. East Champs, Hillcrest, were then bumped up to second with and Glebe claimed the bronze.

East Conference Championships

Colonel By was the big winner at NCSSAA East Conference Championships at the Hornet's Nest Oct 16th, 2008. Colonel By won Midget Boys, Junior Girls and Senior Girls' races in taking the Overall and Girls Aggregates while sharing the Boys Aggregate with Hillcrest. Both the East and West schools will return to the Hornet's Nest next Thursday, Oct 23rd, to fight for the right to represent the National Captial Region at the OFSAA championships in Sarnia.

West Conference Championships

Nepean literally ran away with the West Conference Overall Aggregate, winning all races but the Senior Girls. Nepean had not run many of their athletes prior to the Conference Meet, so they took the competition completely by surprise in the way they dominated each race. Nepean scored a perfect 40 points (best four scores in six categories) to win the Aggregate. Glebe was second with 28 points and Merviale was thrid with 26.

Nepean swept the boys races to win the Boys Aggregate with a perfect 30 points, while Glebe placed 2nd in the Senior Girls, Junior Girls and third in the Midget race to defeat Nepean by a single point for the Girls Aggregate.

NCSSAA Championship Preview

Heading into the Conference Meets we've had a good look at many of the teams vying for the top 2 positions in each race and the coveted trip to Sarnia for the OFSAA Championships. There are always a few surprises as some coaches prefer to hide their talent and catch teams unaware on race day, but from what we have seen so far, here it goes:

Glebe, Colonel By and Nepean are the front runners battling for the 2008 Overall Aggregate Title in the 2008 fall harrier season. Glebe was the top Ottawa school at the Gryphon Open (3rd) and placed 4th overall down at TISS despite not running a Senior Girls team. Nepean was close behind in 5th. Colonel By will counter with strong girls teams, hoping to defend the Girls Overall title they won in 2007 and a Midget Boys team with OFSAA aspirations.

Here is a look at each race as we head into the Conference Meets.

Senior Boys
2007 Champs Earl of March will not have four runners to field a team this year so the title is up for grabs. There are four contenders for the top two spots. Hillcrest acquired transfer Cody Boast to boost their line-up and look to be a strong contender with a solid one-two punch of Wheeler and Boast, both with top 5 potential, and Hugh Gillen and Brendan Woods rounding out the four scorers. Merivale has a similar team with 2007 Junior Silver Medallist Sam Milliken and Kevin Berry up front and Nick Deek and Andrew O'Keefe a couple minutes back. Nepean will counter with gold medal favorite Ian Donald and then a tight packed 2 - 4 back in the high teens and low twenties. 2007 Junior Boys team champs Glebe will have to run strong to upset one of these three, but may get all four scorers in before any other teams 3rd, in an attempt to steal one of the two OFSAA spots.

Individuals to watch: Ian Donald (Nepean) - 2005, 2006, 2007 NC Champion, Phil Wheeler (Hillcrest), Tyson Loney (Earl of March), Tim Huebsch (Gloucester)

Senior Girls
The 2007 SG race provided the most thrilling finish with only 7 points separating 2nd through 5th. This years race should prove to be no less thrilling with at least 4 schools having legitimate shots at claiming the overall title. Defending champs Glebe returns their top three scorers from last years championship team (Alex Bateman, Alex MacIntosh, and Kashani Thomas), plus transfer Leslie Foley in hopes of retaining the title. Colonel By will also push for top honours lead by OFSAA junior silver medallist (2006) Lindsay Anderson who will be joined by the 2007 junior girls runner up team. Merviale has upfront talent in Lisa Giles and great depth, placing 7 runners in the top 30 at the Gryphon Open and is the only team this season to beat Ottawa Valley power house Renfrew CI. Merivale was the top NC school down at TISS despite not running Giles and looks to be the team to beat heading into the Conference Meets. The upset could come from All Saints with the outstanding 1-2 punch of Sarah Boyd (2007 OFSAA XC Bronze Medallist) and Joanna Brown (2008 OFSAA Junior 3000m silver medallist). All Saints has only raced once this season, with Boyd not finishing in form and their #3 having to drop from the field after losing a shoe in the infamous "pit" at the Hornet's Nest.

Individuals to watch: Joanna Brown (All Saints) looks downright scary. She beat the Folkema twins (Renfrew) by over 1 minute at the Hornet's nest and was never really tested. Heather Slinn (Hillcrest) - TISS champion, Lindsay Anderson (Colonel By) - 2006 OFSAA XC Junior Silver Medallist, Sarah Boyd (All Saints) - 2007 OFSAA XC Senior Bronze Medallist, Lisa Giles (Merivale)

Junior Boys
This once again appeared to be a two horse race, but the final prep meet of the season saw a surprise. 2007 Midget Boys Champs Glebe and runner up Nepean were heavy favorites to make the trip to Sarnia for most of the season, until coach Seb Lalonde unleashed his Rebelles at the Hornet's nest. While Glebe won the Gryphon Open they were two points down on Louis Riel at the the Haw-X-Country Open, based on the Rebelles placing 3 runners in the top 6 behind National Capital favorite Mohamed Souleiman. If the Rebelles can get a solid run from #4, they should have enough to win. Nepean beat Glebe down at TISS (2nd - 3rd) by a handy margin and is undefeated in two races against NC competition this fall. Glebe's saving grace is that they have yet to run a full team this fall, having missed at least two of their top 5 in each race this season.

Individuals to watch: Mohamed Souleiman (Louis Riel) - undefeated against NC competition this year, Ian Holstead (Colonel By), Cam Duffin (Nepean) - 2007 NC MB Champion, Chris Long (Glebe).

Junior Girls
2007 Midget Girls champs Colonel By is the odds on favorite to win the Junior Girls race this season. No school is able to match the 1-2 duo of Kathryn Tuck and Rachelle Beanlands, nor the depth of the Cougar squad. 2007 runner up Beatrice Desloges has not been able to field a team yet this year and this may open the door for a Glebe team that lacks the upfront talent, but has good depth through the middle. South Carleton and Ashbury had a close finish at the Haw-X meet and could also battle for one of the top 2 spots.

Individuals to watch: Kathryn Tuck (Colonel By) - 2007 NC MG Champion and teammate Rachelle Beanlands - 3rd in 2007, Alanna MacAuley (Earl of March) - 2007 runner up, Isabelle Kanz (Garneau), and Julia Francki (Sir Wil).

Midget Boys
Ah the wonderful grade 9's. So unpredictable! A very tight finish at the Gryphon Open to kick the season off saw 4 teams separated by only 14 points. Beatrice Desloges and Colonel By have very similar teams (in fact they tied with 76 points at the Haw-X Open), with a legitimate medal contender (Saville for CB and Plante for BD) upfront and then the rest a few minutes back. BD's strength lies in that they have 5 runners competing with each other for that valuable fourth spot, so they can afford to have one runner have an off day. Untested Franco Cite, who finished just behind BD at the Gryphon Open, have not raced since but have a solid top 4, while Glebe has the best 1-2 punch, but needs big runs from #3 and #4 to have any chance at all of cracking the top 2.

Individuals to watch: Adam Palamar (Merivale) - Gryphon Open / Almonte Invite Champion, Sebastien Saville (Colonel By) - Haw-X-Country Champ, Yannick Plante (Beatrice Desloges), Nathan Beauvias (South Carleton), David Borish (Glebe)

Midget Girls
Get ready to toss the dice because just about anything can and may happen here. Franco-Ouest, led by Emma Galbraith was the top NC school at the Gryphon Open early in the season by a healthy margin over runner up Glebe, but have not run since. Glebe was the top NC school at the Pirates Invite in Brockville, while Earl of March won the Haw-X-Country Open** (St. Matt's actually won the event, but their top runner, who finished 1st overall, is only in grade 8....YIKES!). Three races, three different winners, gives you some idea of what to expect (or not to expect) come the NC Championships. Franco gets the nod based on a 20 point victory over Glebe at the Gryphon Open. Glebe has a good shot at holding onto the 2nd spot over Earl of March, but who knows what else is out there we have yet to see this season!

2008 Gryphon Open

Thousand Islands SS of Brockville dominated the 2008 Gryphon Open winning 4 of 6 team titles and capturing the Boys, Girls and Overall aggregates, with 28, 21 and 49 points respectively. Renfrew CI took 2nd in the Girls Aggregate (14) and was 3rd in the Boys (12), to place 2nd in the overall (26), while the host Gryphons placed 3rd overall (20), claiming 2nd in the Boys Aggregate (16). Merivale took 3rd in the Girls Aggregate (12).

Elementary Races

In the elementary races, the 2007 champions from Glashan repeated as Boys Champs based on the strength of a strong 1-2 finish by Julian Nappest and Isaac Freda. In the Girls Race, Beatrice Desloges defended the title they won in 2007 placing all 4 scorers in the top 7, lead by individual champion Olivia Sidock.

Midget Girls

Only one course record managed to fall in the 2008 Open, as Lindsay Kary (St. Matthew) had a strong final kilometre to pull away from runner-up Emma Galbraith (Frano-Ouest) for a 39 second victory, winning in a time of 12:02.3. Both girls bettered the previous course record of 12:43 set in 2007 by Colonel By's Katheryn Tuck.

Thousand Islands placed all 4 scorers in the next 5 spots, led by bronze medallist Shelby Kent to score a meager 19 points, well ahead of 2nd place Fellows (Petawawa) with 79.

Midget Boys

The Midget Boys delivered the closest team competition and the most exciting finish of the day as Adam Palamar (Merivale) and Thomas Kellar (Renfrew) ran stride for stride over the final kilometre before Palamar pulled away over the final few strides for a 4/10 of a second victory. Thousand Islands captured the team title with 43 points, while only 14 points separated 2nd through 5th with Beatrice Desloges (73) taking second over Franco Cite (82), 3rd.

2007 Midget Girls Champion Kathryn Tuck (Colonel By) won her second Gryphon Open title capturing the Junior Girls race followed by Julia Francki (Sir Wil) and Rachelle Beanlands (Colonel By).

Thousand Islands won thier third consecutive race with 53 points, while Colonel By (67) held off Renfrew (69) for second.

Louis Riel's Mohammed Souleiman led the junior boys race from the gun for a 27 second victory over Robbie Deeks of Thousand Islands. Francis Pecoskie (Bishop Smith, Petawawa) placed third. Glebe packed 4 runners within 35 seconds to capture the team title with 54 points, 16 ahead of runner up Thousand Islands (80). Bishop Smith was third with 87 points.

Twins Rebekah and Rachel Folkema finished 1-2 in the Senior Girls race but it wasn't enough to secure a victory for Renfrew as bronze medallist Lisa Giles lead her Merivale (50) teammates to victory, edging Renfrew (56) by 6 points. Hillcrest, lead by 4th place finisher Heather Slinn, finished 3rd with 108 points.

Thousand Islands demonstrated what years of hard work and dedication can do for a senior team (with a dash of talent thrown in for good measure) by sweeping the medals in the Senior Boys race. Jacob Smith, Will McFall and Nick Thomas finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively, with fourth scorer John Wynands placing 7th . Renfrew placed 2nd with 54, while Hillcrest took third with 75.

Boyd wins Bronze
Sarah Boyd (All Saints) turned in the NC regions top performance at the Ontario High School Championships. Boyd crossed the line in Senior Girls 5K event in 17:57 to earn the bronze medal. Other top performers in each of the divisions from the NC region were, Yoseph Gregrezgi of Rideau, 6th (Junior Boys) Kathryn Tuck, Colonel By, 8th (Midget Girls), Joanna Brown, All Saints, 11th (Junior Girls), Ian Donald, Nepean, 12th (Senior Boys), and Andres Carranco, Glebe, 44th (Midget Boys).

Glebe and Nepean continue to Battle
Glebe and Nepean's Midget Boys teams completed their seasonwith strong team finishes at OFSAA. Glebe and Nepean, whom had finished 1-2 at the Gryphon Open, Pirates Invitational, West Conference and National Capital Championships, always only a few points apart, continued their battle in Niagara Falls, with Glebe placing 7th (325 points) and Nepean 8th (359). Colonel By's Midget Girls earned the NC regions only other top 8 finish, placing 7th (304).

Glebe Collegiate captured the Boys and Overall Aggregates, while Colonel By won the Girls Aggregate at the 2007 National Capital High School Cross Country Running Championships. Glebe won the Midget Boys and Junior Boys races enroute to the Boys title, along with winning the Senior Girls race while placing 3rd in the Midget Girls. Colonel By took the Midget Girls race, placed 2nd in the Junior Girls and 7th in the Senior Girls race to win the Girls Aggregate.

NC Preview

The NC Championships are set to go this Thursday, Oct 25th at Terry Fox Athletic Facility (Mooney's Bay). Events get under way with the Midget Girls at 10:00am and finish with the Senior Boys at 1:00pm. Teams and individuals will vie for the 2 team spots and three individual spots available to represent the National Capital Region at the OFSAA Championships in Niagara Falls.

The East and West Conference Meets yielded a few surprises. The biggest surprise was All Saints CHS, who had hidden some of their talent prior to the Conference Meets. Sarah Boyd, a transfer student from Oregon captured the Senior Girls race leading her previously unranked team to a 2nd place finish behind #1 ranked Glebe.

Junior Joanna Brown (All Saints) ran a strong race to win and lead her team to victory as well and now enter the NC meet as heavy favorites for one of the two OFSAA qualifying spots.

Michelle Pion (Franco-Ouest) captured the Midget Girls race and lead her team to a second place finish. It was a great way for Franco-Ouest, who have not competed in XC before to begin their season...with a victory.

Junior Boy, Sam Milliken of Merivale (photo), came through with a big race to capture the West Conference Title. It was a big step for Milliken who had been beaten by runner up Stuart Wilson (Glebe) by over 1 minute earlier in the season over the same course.

The East Conference held fewer surprises with all pre-race favorites coming through on race day. Lester B. Pearson held the lone surprise capturing the Midget Boys team title. #1 ranked Junior Girl team, Garneau, had a rough run. After having placed 4th overall at TISS earlier this year and beating West Conference Champs All Saints (without Brown), Garneau placed 5th in the JG race.

Battles to watch on the 25th:

Midget Boys
Rarely has our region seen the kind of battle the Midget Boys race will produce. Both Glebe and Nepean have earned provincal top 8 rankings and only 3 points separated these two teams at the West Meet, with both teams combining to place all 8 scorers in the top 12. The individual race looks to be a three way battle between Carranco (Glebe), Fawcett (Nepean) and Skupek-Martin (Louis-Riel).

Midget Girls
Colonel By is the class of the field, but the battle for second should be very tight between West Champion Glebe and East runner-up Beatrice Desloges. Glebe beat Beatrice by a mere two points at TISS earlier this year and it should be very close on race day. Beatrice gets the nod upfront, but this battle will come down to the fourth runners. The individual race will likely be a rematch of the East fight between Tuck (Colonel) By and Petersen (Canterbury).

Junior Boys
Glebe dominated (as Midgets) last year with all four runners in the top 8, but my how things change in a year. 2006 MB runner up Hillcrest should make it an interesting battle for the team title. In the individual race, Gregrezgi (Rideau) should battle with Gunn-Doerge (Immaculata) and Milliken (Merivale). Stuart Wilson (Glebe) will look for redemption after a poor race at the West Conference meet last week.

Junior Girls
All Saints and Canterbury (last years MG OFSAA reps) should both be making the trip to the Falls this year. Canterbury and All Saints have completely different teams. Cantebury having three closely packed runners up front with a fourth well back. All Saints has West Champ (Brown) and then a couple tight running duos a few minutes back. Canterbury's hopes rest on their fourth runner keeping close enough to the pack to keep the team score down. Right in between these two is Gloucester who will try to run as a team to upset one of these two teams. The individual race should belong to the West, with Brown (All Saints), Nativ (West Carleton) and Kemp (Nepean), in that order.

Senior Boys
The Earl of March is the team to beat, but will be dogged by East Champs Hillcrest. Similar story to that of the Junior Girls. Hillcrest's hopes rest on getting their third and fourth runners as far ahead of the Earl's #4 as possible. The Earl should pack 1-3 (Loney, Pateras and MacAuley) tightly at the top of the field while Hillcrest will counter with their 1-2 punch of Kennedy and Wheeler. Only Gloucester has a chance of upsettingone of these two. Individually this race belongs to two time OFSAA XC medallist Ian Donald (Nepean). Kennedy will battle with Loney and Pateras for the other two medals.

Senior Girls
Glebe gets the nod here based on placing all four scorers in the top 12 in the West, All Saints and Gloucester should battle for the second spot. Glebe's weakness is that they are only 4 deep (40 spots and almost 3:30 second between #4 and #5), so should one of the top 4 stumble they could be vulnerable. All Saints runs based on the strengh of West Champ Boyd, while Gloucester has a tight packed top three. Once again, it may be the fourth runners who decide the fate of these two teams. Individually, 2006 OFSAA JG Silver Medallist Lindsay Anderson (Colonel By) should win followed by Boyd with Bateman (Glebe), Francki (Sir Wil) and Harvey (Bell) fighting for the bronze medal.

Girls Aggregate:
Glebe, All Saints and Colonel By all have legitimate shots for the Girls Title. Each team has a #1 ranked team, with Glebe and All Saints both having a shot at a second OFSAA birth. Colonel By is the only one with teams in all three categories.

Boys Aggregate:
Glebe is the top pick with strong MB and JB teams and a SB team that may have a top 5 finish. Hillcrest with strong JB and SB teams and a MB team with a potential top 5 finish is the other team to watch.

Overall Aggregate:
Glebe, with 4 teams with top 2 potential is the heavy favorite to repeat as NC Champions

Gloucester High School, by virtue of second place finishes in both the Boys and Girls Overall titles, won the Overall Aggregate at the East Conference Championships at the Hornet's Nest. Colonel By won the Girls Aggregate winning the MG title and placing third in both JG and SG, while Hillcrest won the Boys Aggregate, winning both the JB and SB races and placing second in the MB race.

2007 National Capital Rankings

Well, five weeks into the season and we are all set for the Conference Meets. Several teams have yet to compete, but from what we've seen so far, here is what to expect:

Midget Girls
1. Colonel By
2. Glebe CI
3. Nepean
4. Beatrice Desloges
5. Immaculata

From what we've seen this year Colonel By seems to have the top end talent to win the NC title. Glebe, Nepean and Beatrice Desloges will fight it out for the 2nd OFSAA qualifying sport. Colonel By is undefeated against Ottawa competition this year, but these are Midgets and many schools have not yet competed...always a surprise or two with the Midgets.
Individuals to watch - Katheine Tuck (Colonel By), Breanna Burton (Nepean), Julia Francki (Sir Wil) and a few others we've yet to see race no doubt.

Similar story with the girls, except for the top 2 teams. Glebe is undefeated against all Eastern Ontario High Schools this season winning meets in Port Hope, Ottawa and Brockville. Nepean was their closest competition at both the Gryphon Open and Thousand Islands Invite. As for the rest, it's like tossing dice. Only 5 teams have competed so far, but I'm sure there are others out there..

Newcomer Garneau defeated last years Midget Girls runaway Champs from All Saints at the Thousand Islands Invite, placing 4th and 5th repectively, with only 15 point separating them in the large field. Should be tighter at NC's. Cantebury, 2nd last year, have yet to compete this season, but have all 4 scoring runners returning in good form.
Individuals to watch - Anna Nativ (West Carleton) - '06 MG NC Champ and 17th at OFSAA last year, Emily Alexander (Ashbury), Emily Kemp (Nepean), Heather Slinn (Hillcrest)

Last years Midget Boys Champs from Glebe have experienced growing pains and the race will be much tighter this year. Last years NC champ, Kieran Hooey, is just returning from a fractured ankle, and #4 Phil Brougham has only run once this year due to injury. The team has only run together once this season, defeating Merivale by a single point at the Gryphon Open. Gloucester and Borden were a distant 2nd and 3rd to Glebe at the HawX Invite.
Individuals to watch - Stuart Wilson (Glebe) undefeated in against NC competition this year, Kieran Hooey (Glebe) '06 MB NC Champ, Tait Beck (Ashbury), Ben Gunn-Doerge (Immaculata), Yospeh Gregregi (Rideau), big win at HawX Invite

Senior Girls
1. Glebe
2. Merivale
3. West Carleton
4. Gloucester
5. Lisgar

This will be the tightest fight for the two OFSAA qualifying spots. Despite the loss of last years runner up Maddie Martin (stress fracture), Glebe is undefeated against Ottawa competition this year, winning the Glebe Open and HawX Invite (defeating Gloucester by a single point - although both teams were missing one of their top 4). West Carleton will be the sleeper in the group, having not competed yet this season, but having a solid top five. If they all show up (literally and figuratively) on race day, they will be tough to beat.
Individuals to watch - Lindsay Anderson (Colonel By) '06 JG Champ and OFSAA XC Silver Medalist, Karen Lenarduzzi (St. Matthew), Alex Bateman (Glebe), Amanda Harvey (Bell), Sarah Boyd (All Saints)

Senior Boys
1. Earl of March
2. Gloucester
3. Hillcrest
4. Merivale
5. Beatrice Desloges

Tight battle could form for the top three positions, with the Earl having an edge based on their convincing win in the Junior Boys race last year and the depth of their team (only 20 seconds separated 1-3 in last years JB's race). Add Nick Pateras (5th in '06 SB's race) to the mix and it looks like a winning combination. One point separated Gloucester and Hillcrest at the Thousand Islands Invite. Both teams have similar teams with 2 top runners and then a big gap before #3 and #4. Hillcrest gets the edge up front, but Gloucester's #3 and #4 are better. Hillcrest needs a big run from 3rd - 5th to unseat the Gator's for the #2 spot.
