2012 OFSAA Report

Glebe Girls Golden, Great Day for the Days

Glebe Collegiate won Gold in the Junior Girls race and placed 7th in the Senior Girls enroute to capturing the Overall Girls Title at the 2012 OFSAA Cross Country Championships at the Heart Lake Conservation Area in Brampton ON.

Claire Smith was 5th, Katherine Marshall 11th, Zoe Pritchard 30th, Alexa Livingstone 31st and Emma Barrett 69th as the girls recorded the lowest team score of the day with only 77 points, easily outpacing runner up Bill Crothers of Unionville with 188.

The Day brothers turned in identical performances in different fashion both winning silver medals; Owen in the Midget Boys race while older brother Mickey did the same in the Senior Race.  Owen charged out of the gate and was the only one brave enough to try and stay with Birchmount Park's Edward Hayfron, who had won the Heart Lake invite by 47 seconds.  Day finished only 10 seconds back.  Mickey ran a more tactical race, and was 6th at the halfway point, but moved through the top runners as they started to falter and moved into 2nd place with only 400m remaining to match his brother's finishing place.

Glebe's Midget Boys team also picked up a medal placing 4th overall to win Antique Bronze.

Top NC individual and team finishers were:

NC Championship Review

Glebe Collegiate won the Girls, Boys and Overall Aggregates at the 2012 NCSSAA Cross Country Running Championships, sweeping all three girls races and winning the Midget and Junior Boys races as well.  Nepean prevented Glebe from sweeping the boys by tying Glebe in the Senior Boys race and winning on the tie-breaker.

Midget Girls

Very little changed from the first 400 m in the Midget Girls race as Earl's Sophie Rodenburg went out to the front early, followed closely by Nepean's Olivia Gaudet.  Rodenburg surged over the last kilometre to open up a comfortable 13 second gap. Talia Brennan (Franco Ouest) held off a fast closing Alison Pouw (Glebe).  Pouw's teammates ran well behind her with all four scorers placing in the top 15 to give Glebe the Midget Girls title with 34 points.  Earl of March was a close second with 39 points and Nepean rounded out the top 3 with 51.

Midget Boys

Owen Day (Holy Trinity) blasted up the opening hill and opened an early lead and was never challenged, running to the largest victory of the day (1:06) over Glebe's Darion Dillabaugh.  Jake Weston (Glebe) worked his way from 20th at the 1K mark to over take Mortimore (Franco Cite) just before the homestretch.  Glebe Collegiate won the midget boys race by 43 over Sir Robert Borden (30 - 73), while Nepean placed third.

Junior Girls

The Glebe junior girls turned in the most impressive performance of the day as they were near perfect, placing 1 - 2 - 3 - 5 - 7 for a team score of 11, well ahead of second place Louis Riel 62.  Claire Smith (Glebe) took it out hard, followed only by Meagan Adams (St. Joseph).  Smith's teammates Alexa Livingstone, Zoe Pritchard and Katherine Marshall formed a chase pack that caught the lead duo coming off the beach.  Livingstone moved ahead over the final K, but stumbled and fell on the final decent and Marshall sprinted by to claim the victory.  Smith closed hard, but could not catch Livingstone for the silver.

Junior Boys

No meet is seems can go off perfectly without a course glitch or two.  In the Junior Boys race the top 4 boys were halted at the 2K mark for seemingly going off course, but it was the race director who was in error and the boys quickly resumed the race in the proper direction.  Luckily these four boys, Arjun Walia (Borden), Alex Bernst (Glebe), Morel (Garneau) and Caughey (Bell) had a large enough lead already that the brief hiccup had no effect on OFSAA qualifying positions.  Caughey, who had taken it out hard, fell off the lead pack the earliest and Walia started the break away and only Bernst was able to stay with him.  Bernst powered away over the final 150 m to win, followed by Walia and Morel. The team results matched the individual results as Glebe doubled up on Borden (32 - 63) to win the team title.

Senior Girls

Charlene Rhead (Glebe) and Olivia Robertson (Brookfield) took out the Senior Girls race, with Rhead doing much of the leading over the first 2K, but Robertson powered up the hill at the beginning of the second loop and continued to pull away, opening up to a comfortable 20 second victory over Rhead.  St. Matt's Lindsay Kary earned the bronze medal.  Glebe's girls made it 3 for 3, posting a a 24 point victory (33 - 57) over Beatrice Desloges.

Senior Boys

Mickey Day (Holy Trinity) and the AY Jackson duo of Brendon Howard and Alec Jarvis stayed closely bunched over the first 4K of the final race of the day.  Howard knew it was coming, was prepared for it, but couldn't match Day's mid-race move as Day surged ahead over the final 3K loop to a comfortable victory.  Howard placed second while Jarvis finished third.**  Nepean spoiled Glebe's hope of winning all 6 races with the narrowest of victories.  Nepean (8-16-21-24) and Glebe (9-12-22-26) both tied with 69 points.  NCSSAA by-laws state the tie-breaking procedure as the team with the highest fourth pace finisher.

**Finishing times for the top 8 Senior Boys are inaccurate due to a timing malfunction**

NC Blogger would like to thank all athletes and coaches for a great season and wish all the best to those competing at OFSAA.

NC Preview

Due to a lack of participation in exhibition meets and no Conference Meets this year, it is difficult to give an accurate preview of the upcoming NCSSAA Cross Country Championships.  To date, only 11 of the 38 schools entered in XC have participated in any meets.  Having said that, there should be very few surprises in the Senior races, although there are several top individual runners whose schools have elected not to field any runners this year.

The usual suspects, Glebe, Nepean and Earl of March have all fielded large teams and should compete for the overall titles.

Information about the upcoming championships, along with course maps and results from all exhibition meets this fall can be found on the Glebe XC results page.
